Preston is from east Tennessee; he is a graduate of Daniel Boone High School and ETSU. While at ETSU, Preston interned in the newsroom at WCYB and proved to be so valuable that he moved to fulltime as a videographer/editor after graduation. Preston moved to fulltime reporting in 2006, and he added the weekend anchor responsibilities in 2008.
